PICTURING THE PLAY

A masterclass focusing on practical techniques for getting what’s in your head onto the stage!

How to read a play? It seems like a simple enough question, but for a director, reading the play is about far more than the words on the page. As a freelance director with multiple projects in pre-production at a time, I’ve had to develop productive, efficient, and creativity-inspiring techniques to help me go from “reading” a play on the page to “seeing” a play in my mind’s eye. This class will introduce these techniques and show how these practices can better prepare you for pitching projects to artistic leadership, collaborating efficiently with designers, organizing your pre-production process, and staging the final product. Whether you’re actively directing or curious about expanding your visual vocabulary for future opportunities, this class will forever change the way you read a play.

Who is this class for?

  • An early to mid-career director looking to learn new techniques.

  • An artist (actor, playwright, designer, etc) looking to move into directing or expand the way they work in their discipline.

  • A recent college graduate with a focus in directing who is looking to move into the professional world.

Cost? $50 per person
